Elevating Embedded System Design: Inside Microchip's PolarFire® SoC Discovery Kit

In this post, we break down the technical specifics of our PolarFire® System-on-Chip (SoC) Discovery Kit and their benefits.

PolarFire®

Advancing Embedded Systems with PolarFire® SoCs

In the rapidly evolving domain of embedded systems, the integration of open-source RISC-V architectures with Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) represents a significant leap towards flexibility, power efficiency and performance optimization. Microchip Technology Inc. is at the forefront of this innovation with our launch of the PolarFire® System-on-Chip (SoC) Discovery Kit. This development platform is engineered to democratize access to cutting-edge RISC-V and FPGA technology for a broad spectrum of engineers, from novices to seasoned professionals. Let's delve into the technical specifics that make this kit a pivotal tool for the future of embedded engineering.

Technical Exploration of the PolarFire SoC Discovery Kit

Core Architecture

The Discovery Kit is anchored by the PolarFire MPFS095T SoC FPGA, embodying a multi-core processor that leverages the open-source RISC-V Instruction Set Architecture (ISA). This quad-core, 64-bit CPU cluster is tailored for robust applications demanding a high degree of computational power and efficiency. The SoC supports Linux® and real-time operating systems, offering a versatile platform for developing complex embedded systems.

FPGA Logic Elements

A distinguishing feature of the PolarFire SoC is its 95K logic elements (LEs) of low-power, high-performance FPGA fabric. These LEs empower designers to implement custom digital logic, from simple glue logic functions to complex system-level integrations, including custom peripherals or parallel processing algorithms. This FPGA capability is critical for applications requiring specific, optimized hardware accelerators or custom interfaces.

Memory and Processing Capabilities

The embedded microprocessor subsystem features a large L2 memory subsystem that can be configured either for maximum performance or deterministic operation, supporting asymmetric multi-processing (AMP) mode. This flexibility allows designers to balance the need for high-speed data processing with the deterministic behavior essential for real-time applications. A microSD™ card slot is provided for booting Linux.

Connectivity and Expansion

To ensure wide applicability in various embedded system projects, the Discovery Kit includes a comprehensive set of peripherals and connectivity options:

  • mikroBUS™ Expansion Header: Enables easy integration with Click boards™, offering a plethora of sensors, transceivers and interface boards for rapid prototyping.

  • 40-pin Raspberry Pi® Connector: Ensures compatibility with a wide range of HATs, allowing for extensive I/O expansion.

  • MIPI® Rx Video Connector: Supports video applications, enabling direct connection to cameras and displays for multimedia projects.

  • Communication Interfaces: One Gigabit Ethernet connector and three UART connections via a USB type C connector.

Development and Debugging Tools

An embedded FP5 programmer is integrated for FPGA fabric programming and debugging, streamlining the firmware development process. A DSP FIR Filer reference design is provided for immediate testing. System design using Microchip’s Libero® SoC design suite software can take advantage of a free Silver License. The Libero SoC installer includes the required device programmer drivers.

Availability and Pricing

The PolarFire SoC Discovery Kit is positioned as a cost-effective solution for a wide array of embedded system projects. Available starting at $132 for the general public and at a discounted price of $99 for participants in Microchip’s Academic Program, the kit is designed to be accessible for all levels of designers.

Conclusion

Microchip's PolarFire SoC Discovery Kit stands as a testament to our commitment to innovation, quality and education in the embedded systems domain. By blending the open-source flexibility of RISC-V with the powerful, customizable nature of FPGA technology, this development platform opens new avenues for designers to explore, innovate and realize their visions for next-generation embedded applications. As the demand for more intelligent, efficient and versatile embedded systems continues to grow, tools like the PolarFire SoC Discovery Kit will be instrumental in equipping engineers with the capabilities needed to meet these challenges head-on.
